Genetic Genealogy
Since 2017, I’ve spent some time on a new hobby: genetic genealogy and, in particular, testing of the Y chromosome. My own ancestors along the direct paternal lineage can be traced back to Skived in the southern part of Värmland in Sweden. In one of the projects that I work on, the goal is to learn about the whereabouts of earlier members of that lineage: when did they arrive in Värmland and where from did they come? (See the information below about the Värmland-Hedmark cluster.)
The Värmland-Hedmark Cluster (Y-DNA)
One of the most common Y chromosome haplogroups in Western Europe is called R1b. The Värmland-Hedmark cluster is a small subbranch of R1b. So far, all the testers on this subbranch have oldest known patrilinear ancestors who lived in southern Värmland (in Sweden) or in Hedmark (in Norway). I am myself one of those testers. A more formal definition of the Värmland-Hedmark cluster is R1b > M269 > U106 > Z18 > S11601 > Y112538 > Y100873. Read more about it in the newsletter (link below).
